T-Mobile G1 reaches its end of life; The first Android phone is no more
The world’s foremost Android died today of old age, the T-Mobile G1, (aka HTC Dream) has wretchedly been douse to meadow by T-Mobile. Even though it was only a few years old, the HTC-made T-Mobile G1 just didn’t have what it took to sustain with the likes of the Samsung Captivate and the Nexus One. Some say the G1 committed suicide when it was publicized that it would not be receiving an official update to Android 2.2 Froyo. Likely, T-Mobile pulled the G1 off the shelves so it could continue with its “no phone left behind” act.
I remember when the Dream was the coolest gadget right through the complete mobile geek kingdom. I pre-ordered my black G1 the minute the site went live, and loved it to no end. When all the hacks and mods started coming in for the thing, my love for the Android OS grew even more. That alleged, if we flash forward to today, I couldn’t advise it as a superior buy to friends or family. The hardware is too far behind practically any smartphone competition, which is why the phone was pulled in the first place.
T-Mobile now has the MyTouch Slide, with an enhanced keyboard and uprated internals. By latest gadgets like the Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile’s Galaxy S variant) hitting Magenta, who’d pick the aging device over anything else? It’s sort of hilarious to look at the HTC Dream with the same gleaming belief of it, what with all the advanced “superphones” coming out nowadays. Android has come such a long way since the G1, it’s hard to believe that it started with such a handset.
You’ll always have a particular place in our hearts, Dream, but I’d say your end of life date is past due. I’m surprised that T-Mobile actually kept selling you for so long when each new handset launched on Magenta just made you look older and older. We had some good times G1, but it’s time to be laid down to rest.
