National Day of Unplugging
Saturday March 20th marks the first National Day of Unplugging. As the name implies, those participating unplug fromFacebook status updates, Twitter tweets, mobile gadgets, computers and anything that’s technology. The day began sundown on Friday and continues through Saturday sundown. The day is the brainchild of a group called Reboot.
Reboot is a nonprofit organization which focuses on Jewish identity with the goal of “rebooting” Jewish traditions and making them “vital and resonant” for the recent generation. The group has developed what it calls the Sabbath Manifesto. The manifesto includes 10 core principles the first of which is “Avoid Technology”. It’s that principle which founded the idea behind the National Day of Unplugging.
The principles within the Sabbath Manifesto are open for interpretation to the individual, but their ultimate goal is get people to slow down their lives. I can definitely appreciate that. Unfortunately, when technology is part of your livelihood it makes living the first principle a bit tough.
