Google penetrates the label war

The doors of restaurants and barbershops are ever more plastered with sticky labels advertising diverse online rating services, from Yelp and Citysearch to the distinctive red crest of Zagat.

At present Google needs some of that door-panel realty. The Internet explore giant is mailing out exceptional decals to over 100,000 petite businesses across the U.S. which have been branded as Google beloved Places.Goog1

The sticker’s trait an exceptional bar code. Crack a photo of the bar code with your smartphone camera (such as an iPhone or Google’s own Android-based phones) and you’re mechanically served-up assesses and other information concerning the meticulous mercantile.

It’s all part of Google’s continuing pursuit to entice local businesses onto the Web (and accordingly, to make money selling ads when web surfers explore Google for information on those local trades).

The plan has a few appealing and fascinating potentials in terms of linking the brick-and-mortar world with the virtual world. Let’s just wish merchants have room left on their doors for another decal.
